Must Try Food in Medellin, Colombia

Colombia has a large array of culinary dishes many people believe that Colombia has the same type of food as Mexico or other Latin countries but they have a lot to offer. Their food ranges from the tasty gourmet food to the incredibly tasty street food. Here we have added our top favorite foods we tried in Medellin that we think are must try while visiting there.

Bandeja Paisa

This is the signature dish of the Paisa people ( of the Antioquia region). This dish includes mix of white rice, red beans, shredded meat, chicharrón (pork rind), chorizo, morcilla (black pudding), fried egg, avocado, arepa and plantain. It is thought that the Bandeja Paisa is a modern version of what the peasants would eat. This food was designed to fill the stomach and give energy to those working in the fields. Make Sure to eat this on an empty stomach, since this will fill you up all day.

Beef Medallions in Coffee Sauce

This dish is slightly on the gourmet side of things in Medellin but had to be included. This dish was one of the best we had. They were juicy beef medallions marinated in coffee and cooked to perfection. The dish included fresh mash potatoes with a side of avocado salad with tomates and a Colombian arepa and instead of french fries this restaurant would add a side of crunchy delicious plantain chips. It was just amazing. This could be found at the restaurant La Mulata criolla.

Lychee Soda Cocktail

We know we said must try food. However this is a must try while in Colombia. This is a Lychee Cocktail. Filled with Lychee fruit, cherries and vodka can be replaced with soda for non alcohol drinkers. This is something like a Cherry temple but sooo much more refreshing and delicious thanks to the delicious Lychee fruit just takes it to a whole nother level. It's a must try basically obtainable at any sports bar.

Colombian Hot Dog

In Medellin, like other cities in the world, it has hot dogs stands on the streets and this recipe is very popular in Colombia. In Colombia the people don’t grill the salchichas (hotdogs), they prefer to boil them and the toppings include coleslaw, pineapple sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, potato chips, a quail egg and a fresh sweet bun. When my friends and I would go out to party, we would usually end up at one of the best hot dog stands located on Poblado Avenue in Medellin at 2 o’ clock in the morning. Extremely recommended.

Street food

Overall you just have to simply try the street food in Colombia. It has so much variety from meat, chicken kabobs. There is sweet or salty treats, as well as if you're feeling healthy you can get fresh fruits, aside from many countries in colombia the street food is extremely clean. In colombia the people do not play with sanitation as well as for the vendors to be able to sell on the street they must comply with food safety regulations. Therefore if you decide to visit Colombia do not hesitate in buying a delicious treat, usually you can get Hotdogs, arepas (sweet or salty), fruits, kabobs.
